THIS UNIQUE GRAVESTONE IS IN MONMOUTH, SOUTH WALES. WHY IS IT UNIQUE? IN THE 1800'S, A GENTLEMAN OF THE TOWN, JOHN RENIE, WANTED TO BE REMEMBERED AFTER HIS DEATH, SO HE CARVED HIS OWN GRAVESTONE. NOTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THAT YOU MAY SAY, BUT WHAT HE CARVED ON HIS GRAVESTONE IS WHY HE IS REMEMBERED. LOOKING AT THE GRAVESTONE, IT LOOKS LIKE A JUMBLE OF LETTERS, BUT THERE IS A KEY. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STONE THERE IS A SLIGHTLY LARGER LETTER, H. IF YOU GO UP, DOWN OR SIDEWAYS FROM THIS H, YOU WILL SEE THAT IT READS, "HERE LIES JOHN RENIE". BE SURE TO ENLARGE THE PICTURE BY CLICKING ON IT, TO SEE IT FULLY.

Brilliant thank you. So young to die and he had the whit to leave room underneath.
ReplyDeleteHi Adrian,
ReplyDeleteYes, he was thinking ahead wasn't he.
In some countries that would have been a ripe old age. But he did die young. What a puzzle to figure out.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, sad also.
ReplyDeleteIntriguing and very cleverly done.
ReplyDeleteHi L.D.
ReplyDeleteOne wonders what made him think of such an idea in the first place.
Hi in Hawaii,
ReplyDeleteI agree fully with you, but it left us with something to remember him by.
Hi Cheryl,
ReplyDeleteWhat can one say. I would never have thought of something like that. He must have had a clever mind for the time to think of what he did.
