TWO VIEWS OF A GIANT WELSH LOVE SPOON CARVED FROM ONE PIECE OF WOOD. THE LOVE SPOON ORIGINATED IN WALES HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. IT WAS CARVED BY YOUNG MEN AND OFFERED TO THE GIRL THEY LOVED. VARIOUS SYMBOLS, CARVED INTO THE SPOON, REPRESENTED DIFFERENT SENTIMENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, AS SEEN IN THIS SPOON,
CHAIN = A WISH TO BE TOGETHER FOREVER,
DRAGON = FOR PROTECTION,
CAGED BALLS = LOVE HELD SAFE OR NUMBER OF CHILDREN.

Beautiful art work and symbols!
ReplyDeleteHi Living in the USA,
ReplyDeleteLove spoons are not usually this big. They are normally the size to hang on your wall. It would take an artist quite a while to carve one this size.
What a lovely piece of work. I enjoyed learning of the tradition of the Love spoons.
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl,
ReplyDeleteWales has a lot of traditions, this is but one of them. Thanks for your interest.
