VIRTUOUS WELL TRELLECH

THIS IS ST ANNE'S WELL OR VIRTUOUS WELL, IN TRELLECH, MONMOUTHSHIRE. IT IS BELIEVED THAT IT HAD BEEN A SIGNIFICANT HOLY WELL FOR MANY CENTURIES BEFORE 1680. IN MEDIEVAL TIMES, IT WAS COMMON FOR PILGRIMS TO TIE STRIPS OF CLOTH TO NEARBY TREES, A TRADITION WHICH SEEMS TO CONTINUE TODAY.
