HARLECH CASTLE, NORTH WALES, WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1283 AND 1289 DURING THE REIGN OF EDWARD I. WHEN THE CASTLE WAS FIRST BUILT, THE SEA WAS AT THE BASE OF THE CASTLE, A 200 FOOT DROP. OVER THE YEARS THE SEA HAS RETREATED AND IS NOW SEVERAL MILES AWAY. DURING THE WAR OF THE ROSES, THE CASTLE WAS UNDER SIEGE FOR 7 YEARS. THIS GAVE RISE TO THE FAMOUS SONG "MEN OF HARLECH"

What a lovely photo. Will enjoy following your blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great photo of a beautiful old castle. I love the castles of Europe, but have never had the chance to visit those of the British Isles. Glad I found your blog, very interesting.
ReplyDeleteNow I won't be able to get that tune out of my head "Oh, the manly men of Harlech". Okay, I'm just kidding, Being from the Western U.S. that song has never been a big one here. Hope you don't mind a little sense of humor.
Drop by if you like, maybe you can teach me a few things.
What a wonder-filled photo! I wonder about the history behind the walls of this old castle. So much history in a grand old building such as this!

Great photo and piece of history. I am familiar with the song 'Men of Harlech' but I didn't know its origin. Now I do! Thank you for a most interesting blog.
