HIDDEN BEADSMAN




A SURPRISE AWAITED THE RESTORERS OF THE ALABASTER MONUMENT OF SIR RICHARD HERBERT OF EWYAS IN ST MARY'S PRIORY CHURCH, ABERGAVENNY. WHEN THE MONUMENT WAS DISMANTLED, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE RIGHT FOOT OF THE EFFIGY BORE A BEADSMAN, UNSEEN FOR FIVE CENTURIES. BEFORE THE MONUMENT WAS REPLACED IN ITS ALCOVE, A PLASTER CAST WAS TAKEN OF THE BEADSMAN. FROM THIS WAS MADE AN ALABASTER REPLICA OF THE BEADSMAN, WHICH WAS PLACED ON THE WALL BESIDE THE MONUMENT FOR ALL TO ENJOY.

THIS 13TH CENTURY STONE CROSS, IN THE CHURCH OF ST MARTIN, CWMYOY, IS BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF A SERIES OF CROSSES WHICH MARKED THE PILGRIMS' ROUTE OVER THE BLACK MOUNTAINS TO THE SHRINE OF ST DAVID, PATRON SAINT OF WALES, IN WHAT IS NOW PEMBROKESHIRE.
